Research

My research is focused on environmental philosophy, broadly construed to include environmental ethics, aesthetics, and politics. My current research focuses on technology and environmental issues of the future, especially the challenge that novel objects of moral consideration, like Mars, bring to bear on how we engage in moral theorizing.

Works in Progress

“Environmental Character and Astroethics”

This paper expands on the notion of “environmental character” at work in my previous paper, “Astroethics and the Non-Fungibility Thesis.” The notion of “environmental character” is fairly unclear, but many activists and theorist are concerned with protecting the character of particular natural areas, thus clarification of this important notion is essential.

“Planetary Parks & GIS”

Collaborating with physical geographers, we are working on using the tools of GIS to expand on previous proposals for planetary parks. My forthcoming piece “Mars and the Value of Wilderness” proposes criteria for drawing boundaries for such parks/wilderness areas. This paper explores the hard application of these principles to Mars with the hope of advancing towards a future policy paper.

“Futurism, Utopianism, and Environmental Politics in Outer Space”

This paper explores the application of environmental political philosophy in outer space while critiquing current political envisionings of space settlement, proceeding through an application of Murray Bookchin’s futurism and utopianism. Working from a utopian perspective, I specifically argue against Lockean land proposals for Martian land management and allocation.
